What is ideology? Most people haven't heard, or couldn't explain what an ideology is..two days ago i couldn't either. We live in a society that lives and breaths ideology, but the elements that make it so interesting is how ideologies have changed with society and meanings have altered.
One element of ideology could be sexuality. For instance, how the idea and meaning of the word 'gay' has changed over the years. In the 21st century, gay can be a word to describe someones sexuality, but it can also be used as a descriptive word for something that is 'rubbish'. In today's society, we see people, especially the younger generation of the 21st century use the word 'gay' in every day experiences to proclaim how nonsense or awful something is. It is also still used to describe a persons sexual preference. However, in the 19th century 'gay' was used in speech to explain to people that the person was blithe and merry. Why has the meaning of this word changed? Why in the earlier centuries of society did it mean how happy/cheerful someone was to then change to the complete opposite, and show how abominable something or someone is?
It is truly bizarre to see how people and society changes over the centuries, so much so that words begin to have new meanings. I find it exciting and interesting to see how ideologies have changed over the years. Racism, nowadays is a disgraceful, criminal element of society, where the majority of human beings know that it is wrong and unnecessary. However, not so long ago in the 19th century, racism didn't really have a name or meaning, and it was quite acceptable in society to discriminate each other, mainly due to a persons skin colour and race.
Are these ideologies changing for the better, or are they getting worst? Is society growing and become more equal and humane, or is it becoming less accepting?
